We use a corneal reflection pupillometer to perform readings of the monocular and binocular pupillary distances. These readings are possible in distance vision and near vision. Knowing the inter-pupillary distance is important to ensure the patient’s comfort, when he/she will wear prescription glasses.
Initially, this information should be documented in the refractor (whatever manual or automatic) to correctly position each eyepiece of the system in front of the patient’s eyes. A correct positioning ensures an optimised conduct of the subjective refraction examination and reduces unwanted prismatic effects.
Then, the optician must input the pupillary distances into the edgers, to enable the cutting steps and install the corrective lenses on the frame. So, the prescription glasses will be adapted to the person’s eyes and morphology, thus allowing a quick and comfortable adaptation.
